"Art in the Year of Uncertain Time"
Artist and Contact Tracer, Long Island. Contact tracing has been around for generations, but is something many of us are only learning about during this time of COVID-19. Maria is looking at the plagues of the past to see how they are related to the pandemic we are currently battling. She repurposed a vintage Sears, Roebuck and Co. form selling hats at the turn of the 20th century. She is reaching into the past to connect that far-off time with today's challenges using contemporary materials and combining those with tea-stained paper to invoke historical context. A portion of proceeds will go to the USPS Art Project, an artist collaboration project designed to help artists establish deeper connections while social distancing and help the struggling USPS at the same time. LIC based artist from Louisiana, mainly working in acrylic and collage using rollers and scrapers to create texture, marks, and space. Most recent works have been heavily influenced by current social issues in hope of bringing awareness and/or praise for some her personal views. Literature plays a large part in her work, not only to present a message, but also as a design aesthetic. Working in layers to create depth, texture, juxtaposition, line, and shape are all major players as well and bright, vibrant colors are meant to evoke an energetic spirit. Artist and Tattooist, Queens. These works on paper were produced during early 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown. In times of solitude the practice of making art becomes a cathartic way of working out the grief over of the state of the world. Stacey Woods
